It was a West Australian
power show at Timmis Speedway Mildura on Saturday night
when young-gun Dene McAllan lead home ‘Big Rev’ Neville
Lance and Sydney’s Mark Cooper in an unforgettable 30
lap Speedcar Super Series A Main.
McAllan and the W21 GKR Transport team were a shining
light on the night; slipping under the 15 second mark to
claim The Speedway Shop quick time award before smashing
the competition in the shuffle to claim pole position
for the main event. Mark Brown came out fighting from
position two on the grid, followed by South Australia’s
Luke Dillon, Lance, Cooper, Troy Jenkins, Ben Wiese,
Harley Bishop, Tony Abson, Nathan Smee, Brett Morris,
Peter Ghent Jnr, Matt Young, Colin Brooks, Adam Layton,
David Patterson, Lee Dillon, Peter Bourke and Richard
Emmerson.
At the drop of the green McAllan gained the lead, Mark
Brown dropping down low on the regarded surface and
riding the West Aussie’s tail. Behind them Dillon,
Lance, round one winner Troy Jenkins and Cooper battled
through the first lap to stamp their name into the front
running positions; Cooper slipping under Jenkins through
one and two to capture 5th in an impressive display of
wheel to wheel racing, before challenging Lance for 4th
a lap later.
As McAllan and Brown continued to move precious inches
ahead of the field, Neville Lance entered a furious bout
with Luke Dillon over 3rd. The duo fought side by side
until contact saw the high running Dillon head towards
the wall; the machine expertly reigned in before impact
but allowing Lance, Cooper, Jenkins, Wiese and Smee to
scream by, relegating the round one podium placer back
to 8th in one foul swoop! Laps later Sydney’s Matt Young
came unstuck on turn two, bringing on the yellows.
On the fast paced restart with 23 laps left on the
board, McAllan lead away from Brown, Lance, Cooper,
Jenkins, Wiese, Smee, Dillon, Morris and Bishop; Neville
Lance instantly putting the heat on Brown for the
position, while Cooper presented the crowd with a series
of impressive wheel stands. Wiese had moved up a spot
only to slow allowing Smee and Jenkins through.
Hitting lapped traffic
down the front straight, McAllan took to the highline
into turn 1, Brown shot to the low line to take the
lead, coming unstuck and headed towards the infield
losing a number a crucial positions before the reds were
pulled for a rolling Colin Brooks who was sucked into
the wall between turns 3 and 4.
With the cars reforming
with 15 laps to go, Abson retired from the race as
McAllan, Brown, and Lance led the field to the green.
Taking advantage of the restart, Lance swept under the
high running Brown for a wheel to wheel race out of turn
2, only to see Brown tag the wall on the back straight
allowing Lance to slip into second before the yellow was
pulled for a spun Wiese on turn 4. Unable to avoid
Wiese, Jenkins front end took the brunt of the impact
forcing his retirement from the race. Luke Dillon; who
also turned around in turn 4, and Wiese both restarted
rear of field.
Green again, the top four
were evenly spaced, with McAllan gaining a half corner
lead on his closest challenger Brown. Morris slipped
under Bishop claiming 6th position until Wiese flipped
the N70 machine in turn 2 with 13 laps remaining.
On the restart, McAllan
led from Brown, Lance, Cooper, Smee, Bishop, Morris,
Ghent, Bourke, Layton, Patterson, Young, Lee Dillon,
Luke Dillon and Emmerson. Brown jumped to the low line
under McAllan in turns 3 and 4 but couldn't hold the
line before coming under attack from Lance who captured
second down the back straight with 10 laps to go. Lance
then set his sights on his fellow West Aussie grabbing
the lead before McAllan shot back for another Speedcar
showdown between the leaders. The battle was halted
after Victorian's Ghent Jnr and Bishop made contact in
turn 2 with 9 laps remaining; the duo sent rear of field
for the restart.
As the increasingly slick
track played set-up games with the crew chiefs in the
pits, the pressure was on at the restart with Lance,
Brown, Cooper, Smee and Morris all looking to push
forward to take on McAllan for the win. Morris was the
first mover, slipping under a wide running Smee down the
main straight with 7 laps left on the board. Brown was
the next victim from the slick surface, running wide
through 1 and 2 allowing Cooper to snatch 3rd and seal
his podium placing.
Upfront, the West Aussie
onslaught continued as McAllan and Lance battled for the
lead running side by side over the remaining laps;
McAllan the elated victor after another grueling
Speedcar Super Series A Main event. |
