With both the South
Australian Speedcar Association and local promoters
working together for the Speedway cause, Midget racing
down south is again on the rise and one person stands
out from the pack; South Aussie hard charger John McKay.
Taking on committee duties in 2007-2008, John joined the
SASA with an ultra keen attitude to help with club
promotions and fund raising and in turn, the future
generation involved in the sport. But today he has
topped it all by announcing his commitment to the
national Speedcar Super Series!
After years of speedway involvement with WSS and car
sponsorship, John made the decision to kick-start his
own racing career. After purchasing a V6 Sprintcar three
years ago, an unbeatable opportunity arose in 2007 when
local Speedcar owner Bert Fenton, offered his car for
the Murray Bridge Speedcar Spectacular.
“After selling my V6 sprint, the opportunity came to
have a drive in a midget last Easter and I must confess,
I was blown away.” Said John when committing to the SSS.
“The Easter weekend was great even though the result
didn't really show how well we had done in our first
meeting together. We finished 9th on Saturday night and
started out of 9th on Sunday but DNF'd on lap 15 with a
mechanical problem”.
“We were headed to Sydney
for their 50 lap race before it was washed out, so Bert
and I sat down to discuss the possibility of a full
season in the car and well… here we are!”
With the duo deciding track time was the only way to
improve, both John and Bert agreed the Speedcar Super
Series was an ideal solution in attaining valuable
experience.
“We both decided the only way to better myself and learn
faster is to race with the best in the country, hence
our commitment to SSS. I really have to thank Bert
Fenton for having a bit of faith in me, also Dave Bains
who builds the engine (which is a real ball tearer and
may make a few people open their eyes) and thanks to my
dad Rick who I couldn't do this without.”
“This will be my first real year in a national class and
I’m really looking forward to it”.
