Mark Brown continued his
reign on the Speedcar Super Series by taking out the
opening round of 08-09 at Brisbane International
Speedway on Saturday night, after a vicious on-track war
of attrition.
“It’s always good to get a win early in the series” said
Browndog after the event. “Basically I think you’ve got
to be smart and think of the overall points for the
series… But then you have to remember the other guys are
out there trying to do the same thing!”
Starting the stampede from pole position after locking
away the Revolution Racegear Pole Shuffle victory; Brown
lost the early lead to fellow New South Welshman Nathan
Smee from position two, and Queenslander Todd Wanless
who slipped past on the low line for 2nd through the
first corner.
Brown fought back into second two laps later followed
swiftly by West Australian Dene McAllan into 3rd, whilst
Smee shot away to a five car length lead on the pack
behind him. But it was lapped traffic that saw the lead
drastically change as Brown shot to the high line on
Smee’s low run behind a lapped car, with twenty-two laps
remaining.
Misfortune struck seconds later as Smee came unstuck
amidst the heavy traffic and spun before the field,
unfortunately sending both himself and South Australian
John McKay into a tumble. After climbing from his car,
Smee admitted to the crowd that his arm restraint had
gotten caught on the gear lever restricting his turning
power.
Thankfully both drivers walked away unharmed and despite
the height of McKay’s roll; the SA5 machine was
relatively unharmed. TheSpeedwayShop.com.au QuickTime
winner Brendan Palmer and McAllan also retired from the
race during the resulting stoppage.
Meanwhile Queensland’s Grant Draney was on the move,
having slipped past Wanless, followed by Victorian
Harley Bishop, QLD’s Brock Dean and NSW’s Mark Cooper
and Matt Young.
Draney and Wanless fought an impressive battle for a
number of laps before Wanless, having retaken 2nd place
through turns one and two; drove hard into turn three
and backed the Fox Team Racing NSW9 machine into the
wall, forcing his retirement from the event.
But as the chequered flags waved it was Grant Draney who
was caught in a Rinkin Motorsports sandwich with Brown
taking the win in the bright pink Aggressor machine to
Draney & fellow Rinkin team-mate Harley Bishop rounding
out the podium placings.
“I guess all those guys who have been calling me ‘Barbie
Doll’ because of my paint scheme, should think twice &
get in their own pink car!” said an elated Brown after
the event. “I’m still the Browndog!”
Heat wins were taken out by Tony Abson (NSW), Smee
(NSW), Cooper (NSW), Peter Bourke (NSW) and McAllan
(WA). The B-Main was won by John McKay (SA) ahead of
Peter Ghent (VIC) & Mick Harders (QLD) after New
Zealand’s Jimi Quin and South Australian newcomer Mark
Harrington were sent rear after an on-track incident.
