Despite the increasingly chilly and unseasonable weather
at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway over the weekend; things
were sure looking hot for Sydney’s Mark Brown when he
literally left the field behind to claim not only his
second Speedcar Super Series round of the season, but
also his fiftieth career feature win.
“I’m so glad I won that race!” said a jubilant Brown
after the event. “It was my 50th feature win and what
better event to claim it at, than one of the SSS
rounds”.
Securing pole position for the A Main after a
controversial set of Revolution Racegear pole shuffles
saw two drivers black flagged in separate incidents;
Brown shot to an early lead leaving Queensland’s Brock
Dean to hold off the challenges from Dene McAllan, Mark
Cooper and Brendan Palmer over the remaining 30 laps.
Dean held up expertly on the demanding surface before a
slight move up-track allowed McAllan to force his way
into 2nd place on the low-line, swiftly followed by
Cooper on the next corner.
But the show was all about the Browndog who finished the
race with an unchallengeable lead ahead of McAllan,
Cooper, the QLD contingent of Dean, Palmer, Michael
Harders, and Grant Draney, South Australia’s John McKay,
QLD’s Mark George, Mark Harrington also of South
Australia and QLD’s Sean Burrows.
“I had a bit of fun turning it on in hot laps” said
Brown with a laugh when asked about his contact with the
wall & gentle roll-over in the Rinkin Motorsports
Aggressor machinery. “I came out of turn four after
diving under one car and came up on another car too
quickly. The only way out was up track. But I’ll just
say I was trying to get the crowd back on my side.
Everyone has to cheer on whoever crashes early in the
night to make a comeback!”
Remains of the American Racer right-rear SSS control
tyres were an impressive reminder for fans just how
tough the race conditions can become. After the Midgets
completed their demanding 30-lap battle on the unkind,
slick Toowoomba race surface, Brown’s own rear tyre
could to a brief glance, be mistaken for a pavement
slick; the rubber burnt down in patches to the canvas
and looking like another remorseless lap could have put
the tyre to bed for good!
With this event marking Brown’s 50th career feature win,
starting with his first victory at the Melbourne
Speedbowl in Brooklyn Victoria in 1987 & encompassing
seven Speedcar Super Series victories over the last four
seasons; Mark Brown certainly remains the man to beat!
