Victoria’s Harley Bishop took a last lap opportunity on
Saturday night at Queensland’s Maryborough Speedway, to
snatch the lead from Troy Jenkins and Mark Brown, and
claim the third round of the unbelievably competitive
Speedcar Super Series!
Indeed at the drop of the green, it was Jenkins who
claimed the early lead from current SSS Championship
point score leader Mark Brown, Bishop, QLD’s Brock Dean,
New Zealand’s Jimi Quin, Nathan Smee of NSW, Mark George
and Brendan Palmer both of the Sunshine state.
Immediately the front running duo of Jenkins and Brown
raced away from the pack and set about delivering some
of the finest wheel-to-wheel racing the city of
Maryborough has witnessed! Lapped traffic also brought
Bishop back into contention and as the race progressed
through two yellow caution stoppages for the stopped
Stevie Walsh of New Zealand and later Brock Dean of
Queensland; the Jenkins, Brown and Bishop trio fought
over numerous laps for the victory position.
But as Jenkins continued to hold off the side by side
onslaught of Brown down low and Bishop up high, it was a
last lap maneuver that saw drastic change on the podium
when Brown and Jenkins came together on turn two of the
final lap; pushing both up-track and allowing Bishop to
pounce into the first place position below them both!
As an enthusiastic cheer erupted from the healthy
Maryborough crowd despite the heavy rain throughout the
region; Harley ‘Wild Child’ Bishop took the chequered
flag to claim his maiden Speedcar Super Series victory
in the KC Tools Rinkin Motorsports Aggressor machinery!
Mark Brown claimed the 2nd place ahead of Troy Jenkins,
Jimi Quin, Nathan Smee, Mark Cooper, Mark George and
Dene McAllan.
“The racing all night was wheel to wheel and every heat
race was amazing to watch” said Maryborough Speedway
commentator Ryan Harris. “The entire 30 lap feature race
was sensational!”
Heats winners included Dene McAllan (WA), Brock Dean
(QLD), Jimi Quin (NZ), Nathan Smee (NSW), Brendan Palmer
(QLD) and Mark Brown (NSW).
Brown also claimed The Speedway Shop quick-time award
and a new track lap record by over a second from 13.993
to 12.933 seconds.
