A race with an honour roll of champions, last Saturday night Nathan Smee Racing returned to their home track to compete in the 65th NSW Speedcar Championship. With intense on track challenges, Smee handled the highline with determination and daring to claim fourth in the feature at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway.

With wheel packing and hot laps complete, Nathan returned to the track for his first qualifying heat. A marble draw deciding race positions, NSR were set to compete from second. Charging into turn one at the drop of the green, Smee swept from the outside line to capture the lead. Running smoothly on the tacky track, the chequers dropped on the 8 lap race locking the team into one of two dash races.

Racing in inverted heats, the battle was on with Nathan off the rear in heat number 2. Starting from seventh, Smee was on the move claiming two positions within the opening laps. As the yellows glowed for a spinning car, the race resumed with Smee jumping on the gas into turns one and two on the outside of his competitors. Running high, he remained steadfast but was unable to move forward. Attempting the same swift manoeuvre only one lap later, Smee stormed to the outside of fourth place when near disaster struck. Left without racing room and unable to avoid contact, he rode the right rear launching his Speedcar skywards. The front end crashing to the ground, he regained control but was now in last position with four short laps remaining. With great perseverance, the hunt began as Smee started picking off competitors lap by lap. Making his way back to 5th right on the finish line, Nathan had secured his position in the “top 8” dash.

Situated in 6th on the tally board, the 6 lap dash was a battle of the leaders with the final placings generating the starting line up for the main event. A flag to flag race, the entire field remained the same from the first lap with Nathan securing his 6th position start in the NSW Speedcar Championship.

The 30 lap A main began with Nathan Smee Racing looking to advance from their 6th place start. With gusto, Smee zipped under a fellow racer and claimed 5th on the opener before engaging in a skirmish over the next fourteen laps. Making up ground on the front runners and hitting lapped traffic, Smee quickly grabbed another position on a wide running car and slipped into 4th with half the race remaining. Encountering thick and heavy lapped traffic, Smee pushed his car to the limits and closed in on 3rd. Sweeping high in the back straight and into turns three and four, Smee moved around the outside stealing 3rd from the boxed in driver with 6 laps remaining. Pushing for 2nd, the yellows were pulled with only 3 laps left on the board. With the pack reformed and any race advantage removed, Smee took to the highline heading into turn one allowing a racer to sneak through. Not one to give up, Nathan worked the track to reclaim his place but ran out of laps capturing a fabulous 4th finish for NSR in the 65th NSW Speedcar Championship.

Nathan and the team return to Avalon Raceway Victoria this Saturday night vying for the prestigious and historic Australian Grand Prix win. A race of champions; this is a meeting not to be missed! Head to the pits to meet Nathan and check out Speedcar number 6.
