NSR PR
Making the crucial repairs
after the Australian Speedcar Championship, the Nathan Smee
Racing team returned to Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway as one
of thirty three racing ensembles to contest the Champion of
Champions race meeting.
Starting from pole position
on his first outing, the green flags fell with Nathan dropping
back to second on the start. Heading low into turn four, he
caught a glance at the lead before moving high on the following
lap. With glimmers of déjà vu as another competitor looked under
through turn four, Nathan stuck to his high line before taking
to the outside of the leader down the back straight. Running a
smooth line around turns three and four, Nathan stormed down the
main straight with the race lead. Under constant pressure for the
position and lapped traffic to contend with, Nathan crossed the
finish line in first; capturing another heat win for NSR.

turn 4 - Does it get
any closer?
A tougher
challenge for heat number two with the team due to start from the
rear of the field. A race with two false starts before it was
underway, Smee again took to the outside to move forward.
Passing cars down the back straight, Nathan had swiftly
progressed to sixth position by the next recorded lap. Diving
low into one but unable to snatch another position, Smee
moved up track through turns three and four before pushing the
car to the highest point in turns one and two.
Moving up to fifth then dropping back to sixth, Nathan grabbed
an outside line down the back straight with two laps remaining.
Switching positions on the closing lap, he retook fifth deep into turn one
and secured the position. Nathan was now locked into the top 8
point scorers dash; where the finish results determined the A
main starting line up.
Drawing a
second starting position for the dash, Speedcar 6 was set to start on
the outside of the newly crowned Australian and USAC champion,
American racer; Jerry Coons Jnr, for the 6 lap sprint to the
chequered flag. The race began with the two front runners screaming
into turn one both level pegged for the lead. Nathan maintained
his outside line running wheel to wheel with the champion before
he captured the lead! Switching to the low line, Nathan held the
number one position for the next 2 laps in an intense bout with
Coons Jnr sneaking under to reclaim the top spot with three laps
remaining. Not giving up, a last chance attempt was made for the
lead with Nathan driving hard into the final turns on the high line
outside of Coons Jnr before crossing the finish line; NSR in
second by less than half a second.
