Nathan Smee Racing hit the road again last weekend, travelling
just over 1000kms to Timmis Speedway, Mildura Victoria for
Round 2 of the Speedcar Super Series.
“We need points to keep us alive” said Smee in the lead up to
the event, “dropping out of the first round has given everyone
else an easy advantage so we need to finish and it has to be in
the top 10”.
Sitting in 13th position in the point score and 9th in the Series
Championship, Nathan looked to make inroads on the leader board
from the outset. The twelfth driver to take to the circuit for
time trials, Smee stormed around the 440m track in 15.369
seconds locking in the 4th fastest lap by a mere .644 of a
second. Earning vital points, this placed the Dominator Engine
Speedcar #6 into the inverted fastest off the rear positions for
both heat races.
Smee had his work cut out in the field of heavy hitters. Moving
forward in both of his heats from his 8th and 7th starting
positions, Smee placed 6th in heat one before steadily
progressing to 3rd in heat two, only to have the car slow coming
out of turn 4 heading towards the chequered flag, lucky to
finish home in 5th.
“We got the car back to the pits to fix the problem and started
the Speedcar before the feature, so we were able make the
feature line up grid” said Smee.
After
a four car wide tribute to the fans of Mildura, the NSR team
settled into their 10th start position for the 30 lap A Main
event. As the green flag dropped, Nathan began his chase for the
front runners; swiftly making up valuable ground on his fellow
racers. A race riddled with stoppages over the entire 30 laps;
Smee moved up to 7th position within the opening laps and with
only 13 laps complete, had skillfully secured 5th position.
A hectic race with a major battle brewing up front and
challenges from behind, Smee remained on the pace and was now
within podium contention. As another caution light glowed on the
race track, the single file grid was reformed with only seven
short laps remaining. With nose to tail racing back underway,
Smee moved up track heading out of turn four allowing a
competitor to sneak into fifth. Pushing the car to its limits,
Smee worked the track hunting for his lost position. Running out
of laps, Smee secured 6th place, locking in valuable points and
dollars for Nathan Smee Racing.
“That was a hard race. We race most of these guys each week but
it can be so much tougher at the series shows,” stated Smee
“Everyone wants to move forward in the heats and the features
are full on. This is best competition in the country and no one
holds back”.
Currently in 5th position in the Speedcar Super Series
Championship and 8th in the overall point score, this weekend
Nathan Smee Racing heads to Avalon Raceway Victoria, for Round 3
of the elite racing series.
